Filters.are currently dead. Ran continuously each year from 1969 to 1997, and then sprang back up in 2007. Over the years, they animated dozens of classic novels from Europe and elsewhere. I became interested in these titles after seeing many of them nominated in the various best anime tournaments. I'd unknowingly already watched a couple in their condensed movie forms, and I thought they were great.
So now I've been watching a few more of them, and I was wondering how many other people have watched them. If you've watched any, I'd love to hear your opinions on them, especially the less well known ones.
I just watched Anne of Green Gables, and I thought it was really great. Anne's such a quirky and complex character. I'm watching Romeo and the Black Brothers now, and I've already seen Dog of Flanders and 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. I don't know what to watch after that though. WMTs I've watched:. Anne = 10/10 SoL and comedy. Both the anime and the original are written by talented geniuses.
Anne is too hilarious. Sara = Probably the mother of all shoujo bullying anime/manga out there.
Character of Sara quite differs from the original, where she's more fierce and you can more understand why adults are put off by her. Anime Sara = Ideal Japanese princess. Perfect Yamato Nadeshiko. Book Sara = Ideal Western princess. Has pride on being a princess and will not tolerate fools.
More emphasis on being a benevolent princess ('I must scatter the populace') than just a really nice human being. Perrine = Better than the original book. First arc is just a fun travelling show until shit hits the fan, transitioning into mini Ie Naki Ko (I say mini because it's not as depressing). Then it changes into drama/SoL until the ending. Lucy May = SoL in 1830 Australia, where the Brits are just starting to colonize Adelaide.
The banters and hijinks between the two main sisters are goddamn hilarious. Lots of comedy until the depressing undertones become the main plot in the second arc after a time skip (I love how you can see how much the town grows).
Lots of delicious loli tears near the end. Flone Robinson = SoL in some mysterious island near Papua New Guinea. Lots of trivia about how to make stuff in an abandoned island. Also contains naked Marie Antoinette (Is it historically accurate that she gotta be naked when crossing over to France and becoming Louis's wife? And that child Mozart actually proposed to her at one time?) Partially watched:.
Little Women = Cute girls doing cute things in Civil War America. Alcott will be mad the anime writers added an extra love interest for Jo (her snarky editor). Rascal = SoL in WW1 Wisconsin though you wouldn't know that the way the anime pretended WW1 isn't happening. A shame, considering it could add some spice. MC has bullies but I feel pity for the bullies instead since he's not afraid of them at all.
One time, he actually downed the leader with a single (boxing) punch. Also has a girlfriend (which doesn't seem to have much personality so far other than a nice next door girl type), emphasis on the friend since there's nothing romantic to it.
The show has quite some comedy, though less than Anne or Lucy. Cedi (Little Lord Fauntleroy) = I'm sad to say but the early episodes drama bomb isn't really that good. Perhaps it'll get better once the show becomes an SoL about being a rich noble kid, since the 8-year old shota MC practically has a harem (spicy loli, haughty-turned-nice ojousama, adult personal meido, and strong-willed 'Murrican girl). Annette = Has the most 'evil' WMT protagonist. The show has a second male protagonist who's her victim. Pretty drama heavy, though not without its SoL and comedy parts. Andersen Stories = It's just a colllection of Andersen's fairy tales.
I've only watched the Little Match Girl one (it's the perfect finale). Heart-wrenching as usual. Romeo = Maximum drama with cute girls and boys.
I prefer Ie Naki Ko for my drama because Romeo smells too much like a shonen anime (friendship and all that). I also don't like the changes it made to the book, like adding the part where Romeo saved his own slave trader who bought him. I mean, what? In the original, that guy went to prison but in the anime, he just disappeared after he sold Romeo in Milan.
Heidi = Heartwarming SoL with some heartstrings-tugging moments. Katri = The perfect showcase for Finland pastoral area.
From its beauty to its 'nothing fucking happening' aspect. Has WW1 and the whole Finland Civil War thing in the background, which is a shame considering I really want a WMT taking place in the middle of a war. Portrays sauna accurately, which means no one wears clothes there, so we got naked shots of an old man, a boy, and the girl protagonist so far. Les Mis = I can notice the stretched budget it ran under, but I still find it hard to watch all the depressing shit that's going on in the early episodes.

Konnichiwa Anne = I find it hilarious that this ran at 2009, right when Kemono no Souja Erin is also airing. So I can't choose who has the best loli. Porfy = Don't like the artstyle, the travel lacks punch, the MC is nothing special. It doesn't really hold my attention If asked for top 3, I have to say, Anne, Perrine, and either Lucy May or Sara.
I like Romeo, but not nearly as much as Anne of Green Gables. The problem with Romeo for me is that he seems to lack depth so far. He's just too idealistic of a character.
He's perfectly honest, kind, generous, hard working, loyal, etc. There isn't a mean or negative thought in this child's head. Finally in episode 16, basically halfway though the anime, we see a slight character flaw during a meeting with The Black Brothers. This is the point I'm at now in the anime. Edit: And if you're looking to watch them, the MAL club for WMT has links to more than a dozen of them, with ongoing subs for many of the rest.
